National Computer Science Education Week is being celebrated through Roane County SChools this week. The largest learning event in history, Computer Science Education Week aims to get K-12 students interested in computer coding. During the second week in December, students are encouraged to take part in an “Hour of Code.” During this event, students are literally expected to code for an hour. Along with coding, Computer Science Education Week also highlights the importance of computer science. Computer science is an important subject because it teaches problem-solving and analytical skills, and is an essential skill in the modern job market, with many scholarships out there dedicated to this area of study. Ask your child if they are participating in the "Hour of Code" this week!

Students who start each day with an academic plan find greater success in school! As parents/ guardians it is your desire for your child to have a great experience in school. Here are 5 strategies to help them find success: 1.) Communication: We all know communication is a key. Keep the lines of communication open with your child, their teachers, and the school. Use email and social media to stay informed and up to date. 2.) Organizational Skills: Helping all students stay organized is a challenge. Helping your child organize and prioritize at home will ensure that those skills transfer in the classroom. Model those practices and ask your student how they prioritize their day. 3.) Time Management: Learning time management helps students become more productive and efficient as kill need in all occupations. These skills help alleviate stress and allow student to form a certain amount of control. 4.) Foster Self-Advocacy: the ability to communicate your needs is a huge skill needed in today's classroom. Through the voice they are developing students will find greater success. 5.) Establish Routines: this is one of the most important skills learned. This skill helps reduce stress, increases organization, and allows student to perform their best. Learning to follow the process of a routine helps students to regulate behaviors, learn to think through problems and find the best solutions. As you talk to your child about their day and what they are learning use these 5 strategies to help your student find awareness in ways to be successful in school each and every day!
